ChatGPT is getting another major round of updates, with OpenAI introducing new capabilities that make the AI assistant more useful for reasoning, voice conversations, file analysis and everyday tasks.
The latest changes arrived on August 6 and August 7, 2026, and include an updated GPT-5.6 experience for paid users as well as new file and Projects support inside ChatGPT Voice.

GPT-5.6 Gets More Reliable and Focused
One of the biggest changes is an update to GPT-5.6 in ChatGPT.
OpenAI says the updated model provides more reliable facts and more focused answers. Users on Plus and Pro plans can also access a new control that lets them choose how much “thought” ChatGPT puts into a response.
This is particularly useful for users who want to choose between faster responses for simple questions and deeper reasoning for more complicated tasks.
Instead of treating every question the same way, the new control gives users more influence over how the model approaches a request.
ChatGPT Voice Can Now Work With Files
Another important addition arrived on August 7.
GPT-Live in ChatGPT Voice now supports file uploads and Projects. Users can upload files during a voice conversation and ask ChatGPT to analyze their contents or answer questions about them.
This could make Voice considerably more useful.
For example, a user could upload a document and then discuss it naturally through a voice conversation instead of typing questions one by one.
The integration with Projects also allows Voice conversations to reference recent project chats, sources and project instructions.
Free Users Are Also Getting New Features
OpenAI is also changing the ChatGPT experience for Free and Go users.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for Free and Go users during this week. Starting the following week, those users will also receive unlimited text chats and access to a new Think button for harder questions, although usage guardrails will still apply.
There is an important limitation, however.
Unlimited text chats does not mean unlimited access to every ChatGPT feature. OpenAI says limits will still apply to file uploads, images and other tools.
